DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Q&A
Summer is fast approaching so please read and pass on to keep your pets safe in the summer heat. Bring lots of water on your walks, keep your dogs off the hot pavement, and never ever leave your dog alone in the car (even on days where it doesn’t seem that warm).

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT'S TOO HOT TO WALK YOUR DOG?
This 5-second tip is a good rule of thumb… if you can’t keep your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds; it’s too hot to walk your dog.

WHEN SHOULD I WALK MY DOG DURING THE SUMMER?
Walk your dog when it’s cool. Seems like an obvious tip, but one that many people don’t consider. Be mindful of temperatures and walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when the pavement cools down. Walking your dog in the grass is a great solution to walking on the pavement. You can also consider looking into All-Terrain Dog Boots and Paw Wax.

WHEN IS IT CONSIDERED TOO HOT TO WALK MY DOG ON ASPHALT?
Consider this… At air temps of only 77 degrees the asphalt can reach temps up to 125 degrees causing painful destruction to your dog’s feet.

WHAT ARE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN MY PET?
Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, pale gums, and in more severe cases stumbling, vomiting, unconsciousness, seizures or diarrhea.

HOW DOES HUMIDITY TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION?
Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. However, when the humidity is too high, dogs are unable to cool themselves and their temperatures can escalate to dangerous levels very quickly.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO TO KEEP MY PET SAFE DURING THE SUMMER HEAT?
Provide ample shade and access to fresh, cool water. Limit exercise on hot days. Don’t rely on just a fan to cool your pet.
