Veterinary Student Dental Opportunities

Spending two weeks at Main Street Veterinary Hospital and Dental Clinic was a wonderful experience! During my externship, I assisted and closely observed several oral procedures and surgeries including mandibulectomies, operculectomies, full-mouth extractions, and jaw fracture repair. I was taught how to scale and polish teeth. I was also shown how to correctly take and interpret dental radiographs. Additionally, I learned about anesthesia, analgesia, and antibiotics used in dental procedures. On the last day, I was given a cadaver head and taught how to perform extractions using a high-powered drill. The dental team doctors, and the highly-skilled dentistry nurses were excellent at explaining difficult concepts and were always enthusiastic to teach. My dentistry knowledge was very limited before this off-campus block, but I now feel comfortable diagnosing several dental diseases, taking dental radiographs, cleaning teeth, and performing simple extractions!
